Do you want to become a member of the Catholic Church? Or see what we're about?
Register for OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) with us.
Registration now open for 2026 Inquiry Period -- Tuesday gatherings start September 8th, 2026.
What is OCIA?
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the Church's process for welcoming and preparing individuals who desire to become Catholic or complete their Sacraments of Initiation. Through OCIA, participants are formed for a life of discipleship and receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist, according to their individual journey of faith.

OCIA is far more than a series of classes—it is a journey of conversion centered on developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and growing as a member of His Church. This formation unfolds through distinct stages that include prayer, catechesis, participation in the Church's liturgical life, faith-sharing, and active involvement in the parish community. As participants grow in faith, the entire parish is also renewed by accompanying and welcoming new members into the Body of Christ.

Who Is OCIA For?
All are welcome! OCIA is designed for:

Adults who have never been baptized and wish to become Catholic.
Baptized Christians from other Christian traditions who desire to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.
Baptized Catholics who have not yet received the Sacraments of Confirmation and/or the Eucharist and wish to complete their initiation.

Each person's journey is unique, but the goal remains the same: to foster a lasting conversion of heart and form lifelong disciples who embrace the Gospel, participate fully in the sacramental life of the Church, and live out their faith as active members of the Catholic community.

When are the Classes?
When: Tuesdays 6:30pm-8:00pm
Where: Parish Hall
What: A presentation on an element of the Catholic Faith followed by small group discussion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is OCIA for?
Short answer: Anyone who wants to get closer to God and/or help others get closer to God!
This includes:
-Non-Catholics
-Life-long Catholics
-Those who are interested in learning more about Jesus and the Catholic faith
-Those who want to explore becoming Catholic
How long is the process?
OCIA is a journey of faith, not simply a program with a fixed timeline. Because every person's background, experiences, and spiritual growth are unique, the length of the process varies from one individual to another.

Most participants complete OCIA in about one year, although some may require more. Together with the OCIA team, each person's readiness for the Sacraments of Initiation is prayerfully discerned, respecting the pace of their individual journey toward Christ and His Church.
I’ve been baptized. Will I be "re-baptized"?
In most cases, no. If you were validly baptized in another Christian tradition, the Catholic Church recognizes your Baptism, and you will be received into full communion through a Profession of Faith, followed by the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist.

However, some baptisms are not recognized as valid by the Catholic Church because they do not use the proper baptismal formula or intention. In those cases, Baptism in the Catholic Church is necessary. The OCIA team will gladly help determine whether your Baptism is recognized by the Church.
Why should I do OCIA if I am not Catholic?
Whether you are ready to become Catholic, curious about the Catholic faith, or simply exploring what Christians believe, you are welcome in OCIA.

There is no obligation or commitment to become Catholic by attending. OCIA is a place to ask questions, grow in your understanding of the faith, and experience the life of the Church in a welcoming and supportive community. Those who discern that God is calling them to enter the Catholic Church will continue through the same process toward the Sacraments of Initiation.

If you would like to learn more or begin the conversation, please contact Rafael Quevedo (619) 299-3880 ext, 131 or rafael@vincentcatholic.org
Do I have to attend every Tuesday night?
We strongly encourage participants to attend each session, as the topics build upon one another and provide a solid foundation for understanding the Catholic faith.

We also understand that work, family, and other commitments can make perfect attendance difficult. If you join later in the year or are unable to attend every session, you are still welcome to participate whenever you can. Our goal is to accompany you on your journey of faith, wherever you are in the process.
Where can I find the calendar for the 2026-2027 OCIA year?

What are the requirements for someone to be my godparent for baptism or sponsor for confirmation?
A sponsor serves as a prayer partner, mentor, and faithful witness, offering encouragement and support as you grow in your relationship with Christ and the Church.

Sponsor Requirements

According to diocesan policy and Church law, a sponsor must:

Be at least 16 years of age.
Be a fully initiated Catholic who has received Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist.
Be actively practicing the Catholic faith and living a life consistent with Church teaching.
Not be the parent of the candidate or catechumen.
